Upcoming Events: Things to Check Out This Month in Minneapolis [August]
If you're looking for some awesome shows or fun things to do, here are some of the events I definitely don't want to miss this next month:
Aug 6. Red Eye Tour Homecoming, ft. RP Hooks - IceHouse
As always, the IceHouse is a great venue to showcase local music. This Saturday, RP Hooks is leading a packed show, performing off of his latest album All Black Jesus. The hip hop album goes deep into the artist's personal dreams and ambitions, as well as occasionally touches on poignant cultural critiques. A great way to get educated while grooving on a Saturday night.
Aug 9. Tufawon EP Release - IceHouse
Local rapper / producer Tufawon is releasing a new project: the Homecoming Album, and IceHouse is hosting the release party. There's a great lineup of local artists to keep the music flowing all night; I'm most excited about Maria Isa, a local Puerto Rican-American artists whose culture heavily influences her unique hip hop sounds. I've seen her live before, and her energy is awesome.
Aug 12. Last Friday @ Spades Nightclub
Spades Nightclub, the venue I so lovingly wrote about for putting together an awesome show for Party Favor, is switching over to new management next week. Next Saturday, Aug 13, is there final party. But I'll be there the night before, for the last Friday edition of all-night hip hop.
Aug 12 - 14. Summer Set Music Festival - Somerset, WI
Summerset music festival has a great lineup this year, and it's only an hour drive east of Minneapolis! Headliners include Chance the Rapper, Bassnectar, Marshmello and Grimes - but I'll let the poster speak for itself. If you're heading over there, I will see you on Saturday.
Aug 19. Lil Uzi Vert - Myth
Lil Uzi Vert is coming to perform at Myth nightclub. This will be my first time at that venue, so will be really interested to report on the scene there! If you like hip hop and dancing, it's sure to be a good time.
Aug 22. OT Genasis - the Pourhouse
96.3 is hosting the OT Genasis event at the Pourhouse, with Mr. Peter Parker ensuring a consistent lineup of beats the whole night. The Pourhouse is an awesome venue, specifically for hip hop - get tickets early.
Aug 30. G-Eazy - the Grandstand at MN State Fair.
This is the biggest show/ venue on my list. I'm generally not a big fan of stadium concerts, which the Minnesota grandstand approaches. But I've got a lot of love for Bay Area hero G-Eazy, so I don't think this is one I can miss!
Aug 31. The Moth StorySlam - Amsterdam Bar & Hall
If you've never heard of them before, the Moth is a group that puts on wonderful evenings of live story-telling, with local events happening across the country. At Moth StorySlams, anybody can put their name in a hat, and 10 individuals are randomly selected to tell their stories in front of the rest of the audience. The stories are tied together by a common theme for the evening. The next one in the Twin Cities is the aptly- chosen topic: "Heat". If you've never been to a Moth event, I highly recommend.
Let me know if I'll see you out there.
